Why construction lines drift when you turn the head, and what fixes it

Construction lines are supposed to make a turn easier to understand. Yet a page of rotated heads can have a brow line that climbs, an ear that slides, and a side plane that changes size from one drawing to the next. Each head may look reasonable alone. The sequence fails because the lines no longer describe one object.
This usually happens when the artist redraws familiar marks at each angle. A center line becomes a vertical stroke. An eye line becomes a horizontal stroke. A side plane becomes a circle near the temple. Those symbols work in a front view, but they do not automatically wrap around a turned form.

Give every line a job
Before drawing a line, name what it measures. The vertical center line divides the form and shows the direction of the turn. The brow and eye rails wrap around the face. The side-plane boundary marks a change in the cranial surface. The ear band relates the ear to the brow and nose base.
If a line has no clear job, leave it out. Extra construction can hide drift because the page looks technical even when the landmarks disagree.
Wrap the center line first
Start with a simple cranial ball. Draw the center line over it as if you were laying tape on a rounded object. In a front view, the curve is shallow. As the head turns, the line moves toward the far contour and bends more strongly across the visible surface.
Do not place the features until that curve makes the direction obvious. If the center line says three-quarter but the outer contour still reads as a front view, fix the mass before adding detail.
Build horizontal rails from one anchor
Choose one stable height, such as the brow. Mark it on the near contour, carry it across the center line, then let it disappear around the far side. Add the nose base and mouth only after the first rail feels attached. Keep the spacing between those rails related as they cross the center line.
The far half of each rail is compressed by the turn. It should not be a mirrored copy of the near half. The compression tells the viewer that the surface is turning away.
Check the side plane against the ear
The side plane should not float independently near the temple. Its boundary, the ear, and the jaw all belong to the side of the same form. When the head turns toward profile, that side occupies more of the visible skull. When it turns toward the back, the facial wedge narrows and the rear cranial mass takes over.
Use the ear as a quick check. If the side plane grows but the ear stays in a front-view position, the drawing is combining two angles.
Compare only two views at a time
Trying to correct sixteen drawings at once is difficult. Put a front view beside a 45 degree view. Trace the center line, brow rail, nose base, side-plane boundary, and ear band in the same order on both. Then compare where each line meets the outer contour.
Repeat with the 45 degree view and profile. The goal is not to copy the exact curve. It is to preserve the relationship of the lines as the form turns.
Use the overlay as a check, not a tracing task
Draw the head once without the overlay. Then place the overlay beside your drawing and compare three points: where the center line reaches the chin, where the brow rail leaves the far contour, and where the side-plane boundary meets the ear. Correct the largest disagreement first.
This method keeps construction useful. The overlay is evidence about the form, while your drawing remains the work of observing and deciding.
